Day 452

I scream and thrash out, “Let me out of here!” I am in pain, but I have known pain for so long now, it doesn’t really matter. No one is listening, because no one is left. No one that can hear me, that is. I run to them every night, but they lock themselves away where I cannot get to them. The others like me can’t help. They are trapped too, like me. I am hungry, I need to eat, but I can’t find food. I am running, running, running. Searching, searching, searching for food. I see food and it smells good. I run and pounce, I bite into it. Warm liquid enters my mouth, followed by chewy goodness. I leer down at my food and I know what I am eating; God, it is me…

I sprang out of bed and smashed my head into the upper bunk. I was breathing hard as my ankle throbbed. A small whimper escaped my lips. I was in the basement bunker. I examined my entire body and was thankful I hadn’t turned into a screamer. The bunker appeared to be empty as I peeked through the crack in the open door. “Hello?” I called out. Receiving no response, I limped out of the bedroom and painfully gimped my way up the stairs. I made it to the kitchen before I was bombarded.

“Layla!” Olyvia shouted out in excitement. “You are alive.”

Her outburst startled me, but I held myself together.

Silas ran into the kitchen and wrapped me into a bear hug. “We thought you would turn. We have been waiting so long for you to wake up.”

“How long is, so long?” I asked.

“A month,” Sam stated.

He joined the growing party. Rennie was by his side and she was alive and well.

“Rennie, you are alright?” I asked.

“Yes, I thought it would be cool to teleport the truck to the field, but it didn’t go quite as I planned. A lesson learned the hard way. Thank God for Rich and Olyvia. They had me feeling better in no time at all,” Rennie explained.

“I was bitten, but I haven’t turn into a screamer?” I questioned.

“Exactly, and wait until you see what has happened,” Silas added.

He took my hand and helped me outside. The group followed and soon everyone except Gabe and Lucy were there. The first thing I noticed was all the dead screamers were gone. The air had a lingering stench but not nearly as bad as it had been. The tractor trailer trucks were nowhere to be seen.

“Where are the—”

“We’ve been busy, we have cleared a two-mile radius of the dead, but that’s not important. You must see what we’ve discovered,” Silas explained.

We entered the other bunker and he escorted me into my sister’s old room. The bed was occupied with a female, she lay sleeping. The first thing I noticed was she was restrained to the bed. Her wrist, arms, waist, legs and ankles were chained. Everlee sat in a chair near the bed, but not too close.
